Honoring a Lifetime of Dedication
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Don Kleinfelder, the founder and longtime leader of Child Advocates of Placer and Yuba Counties (CASA). After 17 years of dedicated service, Don’s unexpected passing leaves a profound void in the child advocacy community. His leadership, generosity, and unwavering commitment to children in need will be remembered, and his legacy will continue to shape CASA’s mission and the lives of countless children.
The Beginnings of CASA: A Lifelong Commitment to Children
Don’s journey in child advocacy began in 2004 when he founded CASA with a simple yet powerful belief: every child deserves a safe and loving home. A Vision for Strong Families: Transformative Initiatives
Don’s vision extended beyond traditional child advocacy. In 2010, he introduced the Family Mentor Program, an initiative designed to assist parents in reuniting with their children by providing resources to create stable, safe homes. His deep belief in the power of strong families laid the foundation for a program that helped parents rebuild their lives and relationships.
Furthering his mission, Don established the Family Services Division in 2020. This division focused on addressing the mental health, educational, and emotional needs of foster children, ensuring they received the comprehensive support necessary to thrive in their new homes.
Innovative Programs: Addressing Urgent Needs
Don’s dedication led to groundbreaking programs that tackled some of the most pressing issues affecting vulnerable children. In 2019, he launched the Be Bold program to support victims of human trafficking, bringing much-needed awareness and aid to children who had suffered unimaginable exploitation.
In 2020, Don introduced the K-9 for Kids program, which paired therapy dogs with children who had experienced trauma. These therapy animals played a crucial role in helping children heal, rebuild trust, and regain emotional stability.
Leadership and Personal Impact: A Mentor to Many
Don’s leadership was characterized by his personal touch, kindness, and unwavering support for his colleagues, staff, and volunteers. He was more than just a leader—he was a mentor who inspired those around him with his humility and compassion. His ability to foster a culture of care and respect was instrumental in CASA’s success and the lives it touched.
A Lasting Legacy: The Don Kleinfelder Fund and Heroes Award
To honor Don’s extraordinary contributions, CASA has established the Don Kleinfelder Fund, ensuring that vital programs like the Hero’s Fund continue to support children and families in need.
Additionally, the Don Kleinfelder Heroes Award will be presented annually at the Evening of Hope Gala. This award will recognize individuals who embody Don’s values—those who go above and beyond to serve vulnerable children and families.
A Legacy of Change: The Impact of Don’s Work
Although Don’s passing is a tremendous loss, his legacy lives on in the programs he built, the children whose lives he transformed, and the community he helped shape. His vision for a brighter future for children in foster care continues to inspire CASA and other child advocacy organizations.
As the community mourns, there is comfort in knowing that Don’s work will continue to impact generations to come. His story is a testament to the power of one person’s dedication to changing the world for the better.
